Description

If you could only choose one boot for the broadest period of historic dress, the Larkspurs should be it! This faithful reproduction wool and leather bootie is accurate for a staggering 130+ years, from c. 1810 all the way through the 1930s.

Advertised as warm and comfortable, practical, and even "healthy and sanitary," advertisements for these wool felt and leather boots were a standard in catalogs from the 1890s well into the 1930s. The style itself is significantly older, shown in illustrations throughout the Victorian period and before.

These adorable and versatile booties have a 0.75 in / 2 cm common sense heel  with a safety rubber heel lift. The toes are lightly structure, softly squared. The boots are lined in wool felt to match the upper, with leather facings for durability, and a leather insole. The Larkspurs are wonderfully comfortable, warm, and extremely practical.

My favorite shoe

I purchased these after buying the natural-colored ones and finding them to be the most comfortable shoe I own, even tennis shoes. I decided I would make them my go-to dress shoes and bought the black ones.

I ordered a size 12, as I normally wear a size 10.5 in men's for the increased width. I find that when I wear dress shoes, they are much too wide because of the thinness of the material of the shoe and of your common dress sock. So I opted for the 12 in women's as they are "B" width, rather than "D." Fit perfectly. I'm quite scrawny, so by feet didn't fill the uppers of the shoe very well, but a heel insert not only made the shoes more comfortable but made the fit perfect without direct alteration.

These are sleek. The wool top provides warmth in cold months and is very moisture-wicking and cooling in the warm months. I recommend relacing them to a straight-laced style to make them just that much more comfortable and look more period-accurate at a glance.

As this is a mixed material shoe, it can look a bit strange with spats unless both materials are the same color. These black ones look excellent with a silver, gray, or white spat and a black ensemble.

I cannot recommend these enough, the rounded toe gives plenty of room and avoids the "toe-crushing" all too common with pointed styles.

Perfect for 1920s-1930s historical dress, but I feel as though they would not be out of place up through the 1950s, depending on the dress.

10/10 would wear again.

Great for my wide feet!

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out which boots I would try first from AD. I have solidly wide (D width) feet, 11-11.5 in size. I ordered the size 12 of the Larkspur boots, along with a bottle of stretching spray. Honestly, I'm not sure I will need to use the stretching spray on these at all! I'm really thrilled that they feel quite comfortable on my feet. I am doubly excited that these cover such a long span of time with historical accuracy (over a century!), so I really can't imagine a more versatile boot if you're trying to save money and not buy a bunch of different styles (even though I want to, haha!). Wide footed folks, whether you want a cute boot for modern wear, or something practical to wear with your regency, victorian, or 1930's attire - I'd definitely try the Larkspur out!

Great for dancing

These were my choices for dancing lessons I have been taking. They were very comfortable. Not the most resilient to outside walking. They got a little scraped up walking to and from the car. Might be best to put on and take off before going outside or on picnic or outside gardens

Hi CloudsandBluebirds,

Our shoes are designed to be worn outdoors, what you are seeing is most likely the factory sealant wearing away, which is totally normal. We recommend folks to take a look at the information regarding sole care that can be found in the Shoe Care & Customization section of our website.

Love the Larkspurs

Bought both black/black (practical) and the burgundy/black for fun (and most of my wardrobe resides in red part of the color wheel.

I never know whether to buy 7s or 7.5s. (My feet are 6.5 -7 length but slightly wide.) Usually flats work in 7. These were a bit snug in normal socks (thinner than boot socks, thicker than stockings), but looked like 7.5s would be just too long. Used some Angelus Shoe stretch and the shoe stretchers (see "Accessories" page), and they're fine.

I knew I would love the wool uppers from having a pair of Gettysburgs (earlier version of the currently available Kecklelys). The center front lacing works better on my foot than the side-lacing. (High instep issue). I also like that these have a more substantial sole and 1/2", so also more practical for everday wear and walking on sidewalks.

The black version is a nice true black. The Burgundy is a gorgeous deep red , more like dark cranberry rather than the brown burgundy the fashion world has favored the last few years. So, yay! That's a triple win for me!

(NOTE: the wool uppers may give a bit, but not stretch as much as leather.)

Beautiful, comfortable. I have very wide feet so I ordered a whole size up, they were too big, so I ordered only a half size up. I wore them out to dinner tonight with my jeans. Comfortable, plenty wide enough. I can even wear my thicker 'stretchy' socks with them. very nice indeed, Thank you!!!
